Handsomely constructed of high-quality brushed stainless steel, this cordless electric kettle offers a 1 3/4-quart water capacity and 1500-watt of power which boils water faster than the stove or microwave oven. This cordless kettle lifts from the corded base for easy filling, pouring and serving with an automatic shut off when water boils. The advanced design of the concealed heating element is never in contact with the water, so there is no buildup of objectionable mineral deposits. For safety, the kettle provides automatic shut-off, boil-dry safety protection, a secure locking lid, power on indicator light and cool touch bottom. Worked like a charm but had to replace it when it won't start anymore and has rusted so much from years of use. The Chef's Choice 681 was a great choice for an upgrade. I have been using it for a week and a half and it works great. Heats water in just two minutes! The design is simply beautiful. It is slightly smaller than the older one I have by just 0.5 liters. The price ($50) seems fair as the competing pouring kettles cost about the same or more, all of which are non-electric. The kettle seems to be well built and looks nice. I got this kettle for making coffee in a Hario v60 manual pour-over brewer, and it does the job well: the thin gooseneck spout lets you do a steady controlled pour. It's not as big as the picture makes it look, I think it's just the right size. So at this point I can recommend this kettle. It remains to be seen how durable it is, I am going to update my review in a couple of months to reflect that aspect. Update 01/12/12 So, another point I would like to mention is that the bottom of the kettle is flat, the heating element is hidden, so it is quite easy to clean. Well, I was wrong. I had been using a tea kettle to both heat and pour water, but the pour-rate was hard to control. With the Bonavita, that is no longer the case. Just this morning, I made a Chemex pot of some freshly roasted Guatemalan Finca la Providencia (Taraccino Coffee in Minneapolis... cool place to get some great coffee), and with the Bonavita, a steady stream of water was EASY to do. And the result was an incredible brewed coffee. Though the flavor profile has much to do with the brewing method, that brewing method is greatly affected by the pour. The Guat has never had the depth it did this morning. Amazing cup that really did surprise me. The body rivaled that of my vac-pot brewer. I'm a convert to this style of pouring spout. The slim spout allows for accurate, steady pouring for tea, coffee, etc. I wasn't sure I'd like the handle, but it is actually designed really well for ergonomics. The weight of the water is balanced properly when holding the handle, so it's functionally great. I still don't like the look of the handle, and it is plastic as opposed to stainless steel. But they're putting the money where it needs to go, so at the price, this kettle is great! The kettle does heat up quickly (3-4 minutes) which compares well to other kettles. For manually brewing pourover coffee, this kettle is fantastic. If you're a coffee shop doing manual pourovers, the size will be a limiting factor. It's very light weight but has a tall receptacle that holds the kettle well so we're not concerned about tip over. It boils incredibly fast & has a nice comfortable handle & easy to use lid release. Make sure you follow the initial instructions to boil 3x letting cool each time, before the first use to remove any foul taste. The element is not "protected" so we'd expect scale to build up, but that's easily cleaned. Only gripe is that the filter seems to fall out when tipped upside down. Even so, can recommend this kettle as a low cost but perfectly functional kettle. Bought two; one for my parents and one for me. I use it at least 2-3 times per day. Much faster than either the electric stove or gas range - although I do miss the whistling kettle sound. The cordless feature and level window were two of the deciding factors - besides price. Initial downsides, it took several boiling cycles to get rid of the plastic smell. It is fine now. When we arrived in the US 14 months ago our accommodation didn't have a kettle and we didn't know any local shops so we immediately ordered this kettle. Less than 14 months later I have had to buy a new kettle as this one became temperamental about switching on a couple of months ago and finally refused altogether. It had always felt pretty shoddy and light-weight - on a par with the kind of cheap kettle I took to college some 25 years ago, (very few like this are sold any more t'other side of the pond - bottom end of the market only, costing less than $15 final price.) For between $16 and $20 final price you can easily get much better and more stylish ones over there. Anyway, back to this kettle. On/off switch is very flimsy and easily comes out of its holding clips. It has an exposed element so it gets "furred up" easily. It's base is so...
